\r\n Chattogram, the second-largest city of Bangladesh, is known as the commercial capital of the country.\r\n In addition to its commercial importance, the Chattogram port holds significant geopolitical importance,\r\n attracting the attention of countries across South and Southeast Asia.\r\n <\/p>\r\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\r\n Its\r\nstrategic location near the Bay of Bengal and proximity to regions such as Northeast India,\r\nNepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Southern China creates immense potential to develop Chattogram\r\ninto a regional economic zone through improved connectivity.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nHowever, to transform this vision into an international reality, comprehensive infrastructure\r\ndevelopment and long-term planning are essential. As part of internal development, recent\r\ninitiatives such as modernization of the Chattogram port, construction of flyovers connected to\r\nthe port, development of economic zones in Sitakunda, international-standard five-star hotels,\r\nimproved housing, specialized hospitals, and the establishment of Maritime University have\r\naccelerated efforts to create a large free economic zone centered around Chattogram.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nBeing the commercial capital, Chattogram hosts the country\u2019s largest wholesale markets,\r\nincluding Chaktai and Khatunganj. Additionally, the Karnaphuli River\u2014especially the\r\nfreshwater fish of the Halda River\u2014plays a crucial role in Bangladesh\u2019s fisheries sector. The\r\ntourism sector is also notable, with Cox\u2019s Bazar, Bandarban, and Khagrachari as key attractions.\r\nDespite the criticism of excessive making and daily operating costs, experts believe that the\r\nunder-construction Bangabandhu Tunnel beneath the Karnaphuli River will bring a new\r\ndimension to the transportation system.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAlongside commercial and physical infrastructure development, technological advancement is\r\nbeing driven by public and technical universities such as Chittagong University of Engineering\r\n& Technology (CUET), University of Chittagong, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences\r\nUniversity, and Bangabandhu Maritime University. These institutions contribute to higher\r\nresearch in marine science and port management while developing skilled human resources.\r\nPrivate higher education institutions also play a role in human resource development.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nChattogram is equally valued by historians. From the Mughal era to anti-British movements and\r\nvarious phases of national politics, the region has made significant contributions. Despite its rich\r\nhistory and multidimensional culture, no practical, research-based, non-profit institution has yet\r\nbeen established to systematically study the region.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nHistory opines that globally recognized economic regions like Mumbai and New York developed\r\nlargely due to modern seaports and advanced communication systems. However, economic\r\ndevelopment cannot rely solely on large infrastructure projects; it also requires timely policies\r\nand effective implementation. Such development cannot be achieved overnight or solely through\r\nforeign investment, as many aspects of the region\u2014such as geography, river navigability,\r\nclimate, and their impact on livelihoods\u2014remain insufficiently studied.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nDue to the lack of regular surveys, it is unclear how the region has progressed in terms of\r\neconomic indicators and human resource development over the years. Only through proper data\r\n\r\ncollection and comprehensive evaluation can assess the socio-economic and geopolitical impact\r\nof development in this region and identify future research areas.<\/p>

\r\n \r\n\r\nTo address these issues, continuous and extensive research is essential. This will help build a\r\nprogressive and promising society. It is important to remember that regional economic\r\ndevelopment is closely linked to the socio-economic well-being of the people.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nInitially, through Chittagong Development Research Centre (CDRC) platform, dialogue,\r\ndiscussion as well as research activities on developmental issues can be initiated on a small scale.\r\nThis would create an open platform for researchers, individuals to publish their work. Many\r\ndeveloped countries have internationally recognized research platforms, and even several South\r\nAsian countries have established similar initiatives.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nTo do these, long-term planning would require research on port digitalization, trade facilitation,\r\nand removal of import-export barriers involving countries connected by land and water routes,\r\nincluding China, Northeast India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Other research areas could include soil\r\nfertility, increasing salinity, freshwater fish breeding, climate change impacts, coastal living\r\nstandards, and modernization of internal port systems.<\/p>

\r\nFurther topics include biodiversity conservation, safari parks, improving the livelihoods of\r\nindigenous communities and assessing carbon emission impacts on the natural resources of\r\nBandarban and Khagrachari. Developing human resources in all sectors will require coordinated\r\npolicy frameworks.<\/p>

\r\nIt is noted that unplanned, costly projects approved without proper long-term strategy do not\r\nconstitute sustainable development. Therefore, a well-structured, long-term plan is essential to\r\nmake this transnational economic alliance successful. The first step is to identify and eliminate\r\nimplementation barriers, followed by discussions on coordinated public-private investment\r\nstrategies and evaluation of financial and social returns.<\/p>

\r\nTo answer future questions, continuous analysis of relevant data is crucial. For this, a unique\r\nplatform is needed where professionals from home and abroad can contribute research and share\r\nknowledge with society. Eventually, these research outputs should be published in\r\ninternationally recognized journals, enhancing Chattogram\u2019s global academic presence beyond\r\nits commercial identity.<\/p>

\r\n \r\n\r\nMoreover, research findings on trade, industry, culture, climate, and marine science will\r\ncontribute to regional development across countries. To lead Chattogram as a transnational free\r\neconomic zone, both government support and private sector participation in research projects are\r\nessential. Funding agencies can be acknowledged in research publications, providing tax benefits\r\nand encouraging private sector involvement.<\/p>\r\n

\r\n \r\n\r\nStarting small but maintaining international standards will create an open environment for\r\nacademic collaboration. Over the years, this initiative could eventually open new avenues for\r\nmultidisciplinary research on Bangladesh and South Asia, helping to shape the future of a larger\r\nregional economic zone centered on Chattogram.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n
